Dark patchouli oil is produced when the leaves of Pogostemon cablin are steam-distilled in iron vessels, which imparts the characteristic deep golden-orange to reddish-brown color and intensifies the earthy, complex aroma. Unlike light patchouli, dark patchouli improves significantly with age — the oil mellows and deepens over time, making aged batches highly prized in perfumery.
